Features & benefits

  • Polyether soft segmentResists hydrolysis in blood and saline over prolonged contact, where a polyester-based TPU would degrade.
  • High elongation at breakTubing can be stretched and flexed through tortuous anatomy without tearing or forming permanent kinks.
  • Low flexural modulus relative to rigid thermoplasticsDelivers the softness a catheter shaft needs while retaining enough hoop strength to keep the lumen open.
  • Excellent flex fatigue lifeSurvives the repeated bending a chronic indwelling or dynamic device sees over its service life.
  • Documented haemocompatibilityISO 10993-4 blood-interaction data already exists, which is the critical package for blood-contacting devices.

MethodCompatibleMax dose / cyclesProperty retentionDiscoloration
Gamma irradiationCompatibleConfirm with producerGenerally well tolerated at single-dose device levels. Some cross-linking occurs, which can slightly stiffen the material.Mild yellowing of the natural translucent colour is common and dose-dependent.
E-beamCompatibleConfirm with producerComparable to gamma, with similar mild cross-linking.Generally less than gamma at equivalent dose.
X-rayConditionalConfirm with producerExpected to track gamma behaviour.Expected to track gamma behaviour.
Ethylene oxideCompatibleConfirm with producerThe preferred route for TPU. Low process temperature leaves properties unaffected.None expected.
Steam autoclaveNot recommendedNot applicableA soft thermoplastic elastomer will distort at autoclave temperature, and saturated steam drives hydrolysis of the urethane linkage. Tubing may soften, deform or lose dimensional stability.Surface tackiness and clouding may develop.
Vaporized hydrogen peroxideConditionalConfirm with producerLow-temperature process; bulk properties likely unaffected, though repeated oxidative exposure may affect the surface.Minor surface effects possible over many cycles.
Dry heatNot recommendedNot applicableDry-heat cycles run far above the service temperature of an 80A TPU; parts will soften and distort before sterility is achieved.Thermal yellowing expected.

Maximum dose and cycle counts require producer validation data, so we show "Confirm with producer" rather than a figure. Retention and discoloration notes are qualitative. Sterilization must always be validated on the finished device.

Alternates in our catalog

  • Pellethane 2363-90ALubrizolHarder at 90A durometer · Higher flexural modulus · Less flexibleStep up in durometer when the shaft needs more pushability and burst strength, at the cost of some flexibility and kink resistance.
  • Medical PVC Compound 70 Shore AContains phthalate plasticiser · Substantially lower cost · Lower flex fatigue lifeOnly where cost dominates and a plasticised material is acceptable. Note that DEHP content is increasingly restricted for paediatric and neonatal devices.
  • Medical TPE CompoundLower cost · Easier overmoulding onto rigid substrates · Lower tensile strength and fatigue lifeChoose a styrenic TPE for soft-touch grips and static seals where the dynamic fatigue life of a TPU is not required.

Cross-references indicate a similar material family, not a guaranteed drop-in. Qualify any substitution against your own part and process.

Data reconciliation

A researched value disagreed with the figure already in our catalog. We keep serving the catalog value and surface the disagreement here rather than silently overwriting it — a mismatch between two published sources is itself information you may want to chase.

Pellethane 2363-80A — engineering FAQs

Can Pellethane 2363-80A be autoclaved?
No. An 80A thermoplastic polyurethane has no meaningful load-bearing stiffness at 121–134 °C, so parts soften and distort, and saturated steam also hydrolyses the urethane linkage. Ethylene oxide is the conventional route for this material, and gamma and e-beam are both listed as compatible.
Why choose a polyether TPU over a polyester TPU for catheters?
Hydrolytic stability. The polyether soft segment resists hydrolysis in blood and saline, whereas a polyester-based TPU degrades over prolonged wet contact. For an indwelling device that stays in the body for days or weeks, that difference decides whether the shaft retains its strength.
Is Pellethane 2363-80A DEHP-free and phthalate-free?
Yes. Thermoplastic polyurethane gets its softness from its own soft-segment chemistry rather than an added plasticiser, so there is no DEHP or other phthalate to leach out. This is the main reason TPU is specified in place of plasticised PVC for paediatric and neonatal fluid paths, where phthalate restrictions are tightening.
What body contact duration is Pellethane 2363-80A qualified for?
The grade record classifies it for prolonged contact, meaning 24 hours to 30 days under ISO 10993-1, and it carries USP Class VI along with ISO 10993 parts 4, 5 and 11. Part 4 haemocompatibility is the critical package for blood-contacting devices. For permanent implant contact beyond 30 days you would need an implant-grade material such as Zeniva ZA-500 PEEK.
How does Pellethane 2363-80A behave after gamma sterilization?
It is listed as gamma compatible and is generally well tolerated at single-dose device levels. Expect some cross-linking, which can slightly stiffen the material, and mild dose-dependent yellowing of the natural translucent colour. We do not publish a maximum dose here — confirm the qualified range with Lubrizol, particularly if the part is dimensionally or optically critical.
Will lipids or lipid-based infusions affect Pellethane tubing?
Over prolonged contact, yes. Lipids can be absorbed into the soft segment, causing swelling and some softening. It is worth qualifying specifically if the line will carry lipid emulsions such as parenteral nutrition. For short-duration contact the effect is minor.

Property comparison vs Makrolon Rx1805

Pellethane 2363-80A and Makrolon Rx1805 were tested to different standards on several properties. We only place two numbers side by side when the methods actually support it — and we say so, with the standard's own words, when they don't.
